Kate Baylay
Illustrator
“Kate’s work is extraordinarily exciting and fresh. Having seen some of it, I asked her to read Philip Pullman’s great trilogy in a week & design a jacket in another week. The result is stunning. The author loves it.” - David Campbell, Chairman of Everyman’s library & Scala Publishers
“At Millrace, we have been delighted with Kate Baylay’s illustrations for our book jackets. Not only has she responded with originality, flair and sensitivity to each brief but she delivered the drawings on time and with total professionalism. We would not hesitate to commission her again.” - Viv Cripps, Director of Millrace
Graduating with a First Class Honours degree in illustration from the University of the West of England in 2012, Kate has already found her freelance skills in demand from leading publishers and others. Work that is at once both dark yet almost deceptively decorative springs instantly from the page, with accurate inspiration from the ‘Golden Age’ illustrators immediately impressing the viewer.
Kate herself, however, is keen to experiment. Her output to a very tight brief can be accurate and inspirational, but she admits equally to enjoying feedback from a more open and discursive approach as well. Almost more importantly, work is delivered on time to agreed deadlines.
